Media Software

Here are some recommended software tools used in online courses.

Apple QuickTime

QuickTime is a media playback and streaming software from Apple Inc. This software is available to all platforms and is used with WVU’s QuickTime media server. This software is required for our Live Classroom service.

Real Player

Real Player is another video and audio playback and streaming software that offers some different capabilities than Apple QuickTime. This software is specifically necessary for playing Windows Media Video and Windows Media Audio over a secure connection, and for use with our Live Classroom software.

Windows Media Player

Windows Media is an advanced media playback and streaming software from Microsoft. It comes pre-installed on all Windows PCs.

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is a commercial software package that includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more. This is the standard office software at WVU and many WVU eCampus instructors distribute documents and assignments in this format.

Office 2007 Compatibility Pack

The newest version of Microsoft Office saves information in a new format that is not compatible with older versions. Fortunately, Microsoft has released a compatibility package that offers conversion in and out of these new formats.

Open Office

OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open-standard format, and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used free of charge.
